Welcome to Waroeng Nona

Hello everyone! My name is Nona, although some of you may know me as Sindy. To honour my Javanese and Ambonese roots, I’ve combined my love for Indonesian street food and my own ongoing culinary journey to create Waroeng Nona, a home for authentic Indonesian flavours.

‘Waroeng’ signifies a pop-up shop or a stall in Bahasa Indonesia. Both my parents are Indonesians but from different ethnic backgrounds. My mother hails from the island of Java, renowned for its vibrant street food culture, while my father comes from Ambon, known as the Island of Spice by the Dutch. For 22 years in Indonesia, I was affectionately called ‘Nona’ by everyone, which means ‘Missy’ or ‘Lady’ in Ambonese. However, since moving to the UK in 2011, I’ve been known as ‘Sindy’. But rest assured, both names refer to the same person with the same dreams
and passions.

Since first setting foot in a Cardiff kitchen in 2012, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn and develop under the guidance of many talented chefs. They’ve imparted not only cooking skills but also the importance of character, work ethic, dreams, and passion in this craft.

In 2020, while the lockdown initially delayed our plans, it didn’t dampen my eagerness to share the flavours of my childhood. Hence, Waroeng Nona came into being, delivering a slice of Indonesia to your doorstep. It was a challenging yet rewarding time, albeit a journey that had to be temporarily put on hold. Nevertheless, we’re excited to be back, and I warmly invite you all to rejoin me on this culinary adventure where we’ll traverse through the tantalising world of Indonesian flavours.
